色の説明

胡粉色（ごふんいろ）とは、日本画にも使われる白色顔料の「胡粉」の色をさし、ごくわずかに黄みがかった白色のことです。胡粉はイタボガキなどの貝殻を焼いて粉末状にしたもので、下塗りとして発色を良くしたり、他の絵具と混ぜあわせて色調を出すのにも用いられました。
奈良時代は錫を焼いて作る鉛白（えんぱく）や白土（はくど）も胡粉として用いられましたが、時間とともに黒ずみ、人体に有害であることから、鎌倉時代には現在のものが用いられるようになったようです。ちなみに、「胡」はかつて中国の西方を意味する呼び名からつきました。
