色の説明
真鍮色（しんちゅういろ）とは、金属の真鍮のような渋い黄色のことです。色としては比較的新しく、明治以降の文学作品で使われていた表現が色名として定着しました。
『真鍮色』について、「色名大辞典」（一九五〇）では「真鍮のごとき色をいう。金色の赤みの少ない色」とあり、『山吹色』のような鮮やかな『黄色』や、『黄金色 』のような金の色に比べると、『真鍮色』は金属としての実感を伴った、落ち着いた『黄色』であり、光の当たり方や経年変化によって微妙に表情を変える、真鍮ならではの色を表現した色味と言えるでしょう。
真鍮（しんちゅう）
真鍮は、銅と亜鉛を主成分とする合金のことで、「黄銅 」とも呼ばれる。耐食性に優れ、加工しやすいという特性から、古くよりさまざまな生活用品や装飾品に用いられてきた。
日本でも江戸時代には、「金座」「銀座」と並んで「真鍮座」が設けられ、貨幣や金具などの素材として重要な役割を担っていた金属でもある。

現在でも『真鍮色』はとても身近で、五円硬貨をはじめインテリアや調理器具などいたるところで目にします。特別な装飾の色というよりも、日常の中に自然に溶け込んだ、私たちの生活に定着している色といえます。

Shinchu-iro refers to a subdued yellow reminiscent of brass metal. As a color name, it is relatively modern, becoming established from expressions found in literary works after the Meiji period.
According to the Dictionary of Color Names (1950), Shinchu-iro is described as “a color like brass; a golden hue with little reddish tone.” Compared to vivid yellows such as Yamabuki-iro, or the brilliant metallic tone of Kogane-iro (gold color), Shinchu-iro is characterized by a calmer yellow that conveys the tangible presence of metal. Another distinctive feature of this color is how its appearance subtly changes depending on lighting conditions and the passage of time—qualities unique to brass itself.
Brass (Shinchū)
Brass is an alloy primarily composed of copper and zinc, also known as Ōdō (literally “yellow copper”). Owing to its excellent corrosion resistance and ease of processing, it has long been used for a wide range of everyday objects and decorative items.
In Japan, brass played an important role as early as the Edo period. Alongside the Gold Guild (Kinza) and Silver Guild (Ginza), a Brass Guild (Shinchūza) was established, and brass was widely used for coinage, fittings, and other essential materials.
Even today, Shinchu-iro remains a familiar presence in daily life, seen in objects such as the five-yen coin, interior furnishings, and kitchen utensils. Rather than a purely decorative color, it is a hue that blends naturally into everyday surroundings—a color firmly rooted in ordinary life.
