色の説明

雄黄（ゆうおう）とは、明るい鮮やかな黄色のことです。硫化砒素（ひそ）を主成分とする鉱物の『石黄（せきおう）』から作られた顔料の色。石黄は『雄黄（ゆうおう）』とも呼ばれ、それが色名の由来です。

ちなみに石黄は厳密には色が淡いものを「雄黄（おおう）」と呼び、色が濃いものを「雌黄（しおう）」と呼んで区別していました。古くは「雄黄（おおう）」を「鶏冠石（けいかんせき）」と呼んでいましたが、現在では「雌黄」の別称が「鶏冠石」とされています。

石黄は純度の高いものほど黄色が鮮やかであり、各地で産していましたが、毒性が強く、現在は顔料として使用されていません。その危険性は江戸後期の読本『雨月物語（うげつものがたり）』で、蛇の化身を退治するために雄黄を用意させる場面があるほどです。

雄黄は平安時代の歴史書『続日本紀（しょくにほんぎ）』に記載がみられるほど古い顔料ですが、昔の日本画にあっても、その豊かな黄色は現在まで保たれています。

[Explanation of a color]
