碧色(へきしょく)とは？：伝統色のいろは

色の説明

碧色（へきしょく）とは、強い青緑色のことです。碧は「碧玉（へきぎょく）」を指しており、その中でも「緑碧玉（りょくへきぎょく）」の色が元になっています。

碧玉は不純物が多く混じった石英の結晶。混ざっている不純物の違いにより青・赤・緑・紫・黄褐色と様々な色があることから、古代より曲玉・首飾りなどの装飾品として用いられてきました。

我が国では出雲の「玉造石（たまつくりいし）」、佐渡の「赤玉」、津軽の「錦石（にしきいし）」の一部が碧玉に当たります。また、三月の誕生石であるブラッド・ストーンも碧玉の一つ。

「碧」が付く伝統色には他に『青碧（せいへき）』や『紺碧（こんぺき）』などがあります。

ちなみに、「碧」の字は「あお」「みどり」と読まれますが、これは青い碧を「あお」、緑の碧を「みどり」と石の色によって読み方を変えた名残ではないかと思われます。
