色の説明
蟹鳥染（かにとりぞめ）とは、藍染 による染め色の一つで、淡い水色のことです。読みは『かにとりぞめ』ですが、『かにどりぞめ』と読んでも間違いではありません。
なお、「蟹鳥 」とは、貴人（公家など身分の高い人）が用いた練り絹 の産着 のことで、『薄縹 』に染め、「蟹」「鶴」「宝尽くし」といった縁起の良い絵柄を、白く小紋抜きに染めたものでした。
『蟹鳥染』は江戸時代に生まれた色名であり、産着の色を「蟹鳥の染め色」と呼んでいたものが転じて、『蟹鳥染』という名で定着したものでしょう。
ちなみに、『蟹鳥染』に似た色には古くからの藍染の色である『白藍 』『白縹 』『白青 』などがありますが、『蟹鳥染』のほうが江戸時代らしい遊び心を感じさせ、由来が気になる味わい深い色名となっています。

The term kanitori originally referred to ceremonial newborn garments made of refined silk, worn by people of high status such as court nobles. These garments were dyed in Usuhanada, a light blue tone, and decorated with auspicious motifs such as crabs, cranes, and takara-zukushi (treasure patterns), rendered in white using the komon-nuki resist-dyeing technique.
The name Kanitorizome is thought to have originated from the expression “the dye color of kanitori garments,” which later became established as a color name in its own right.
As an aside, there are other traditional indigo-derived pale blues, such as Shirai, Shirohanada, and Shirao. However, Kanitorizome stands out for its distinctly Edo-period sense of playfulness, making it a color name whose origin invites curiosity and leaves a lasting impression.
