色の説明
牡丹鼠（ぼたんねず）とは、深く渋い紅色のことです。染め色の一種で、色名はその名のとおり『牡丹色』に『鼠色 』を重ね合わせたような色合いに由来します。
江戸後期から明治期にかけて「四十八茶百鼠 」と呼ばれる茶や鼠色系の流行色が庶民の間で人気を集めました。しかし、『牡丹鼠』の名は江戸や明治の染物書にも見られないことから、明治期以降に生まれた色名でしょう。
『牡丹鼠』は、穏やかさと落ち着きの中に艶やかさを感じさせる色合いを持ち、着物や工芸品などに今も用いられています。そう考えると日本人の色に関する感性は今も変わっていないのかもしれません。
ちなみに、同じように花の名を冠した鼠色には『梅鼠 』『桜鼠 』『藤鼠 』などがあり、これらは、いずれも落ち着きと華やかさをあわせ持つ点で共通し、気品と親しみを兼ね備えた色となっています。

Botan-nezu (Peony Gray) refers to a deep and subdued reddish color. It is a type of dyed color, and the name derives from a hue that combines botan-iro (peony red) with nezumi-iro (gray).
From the late Edo period to the Meiji era, subdued tones such as browns and grays became fashionable among common people, and these were collectively known as Shijūhatcha Hyakunezumi (“forty-eight browns and one hundred grays”). However, since the name Botan-nezumi does not appear in dyeing manuals from either the Edo or the Meiji period, it is thought to have originated sometime after the Meiji era.
Botan-nezumi, with its calm and subdued impression accented by a touch of elegance, continues to be used today in kimono and traditional crafts. This suggests that the Japanese sensibility toward color may not have changed much over time.
In addition, other shades of gray named after flowers include Ume-nezumi (plum gray), Sakura-nezumi (cherry blossom gray), and Fuji-nezumi (wisteria gray). These colors all share the qualities of calmness and brightness, embodying both refinement and familiarity.
