色の説明

白緑（びゃくろく）とは、鉱物の「孔雀石（くじゃくいし）」から作られる岩絵具の色で淡い緑色のことです。色名の「白」とは「淡い」という意味。英名はオパールグリーン（opal green）。

『金青（こんじょう）』『緑青（ろくしょう）』などの岩絵具は飛鳥時代（五九三〜七一○）に中国から製法とともに伝来し、奈良時代（七一○〜七九四）には仏像や仏画の彩色に使用されました。『白緑』もまた同時期に伝来したと思われます。

ちなみに、『緑青』も『白緑』と同じく「孔雀石」から作られる顔料ですが、粒子が荒いため色合は「孔雀石」に近い緑色となっています。

中国の画譜『芥子園畫傳（かいしえんがでん）』には「孔雀石」を水飛（すいひ）して、『頭緑』『二緑」「三緑』に分けると記されており、この『頭緑』が『白緑』のことを指しています。

顔料名としては非常に古い『白緑』ですが、色名が染色名や一般色名として使われるようになったのはずっと後代になってからでした。

[Explanation of a color]

The Byakuroku is a pale green color of rock paint made from the mineral "peacock stone". The color name "Byaku" means "pale". The English name is "Opal Green".

Iwa-enogu, such as Kinsei and Rokushou, was introduced from China in the Asuka period (593-710), along with its production method. It was used to color Buddhist statues and paintings in the Nara period (710-794). Byakuroku is also thought to have been introduced at the same time.

Incidentally, like Byakuroku, Rokushou is also a pigment made from peacock stone, but because of the roughness of the particles, the color tone is green, similar to peacock stone.

In the Chinese painting book "The Kaishi-gaden", it is written that "peacock stone" is divided into "head green", "first green", and "second green" by suifei suihi. It is a very old pigment name.

Although "Byakuroku" is a very old pigment name, it was not until much later that the color name came to be used as a dyeing name or general color name.
