色の説明
夏虫色（なつむしいろ）とは、タマムシ（玉虫）という甲虫の翅 のような暗い青みのある緑色のことです。古くからの染め色の一つで、色名の「夏虫」とはタマムシを意味し、その翅 の持つ光沢ある色合いに由来します。『玉虫色 』『虫襖 』は同色にあたります。
『夏虫色』は平安時代から見られる古い色名で、「枕草子 」（一◯◯◯）にも「さしぬきは 夏むしの色したるも 涼しげなり」と記されています。ただし、この時代の「夏虫」はセミや蛾など、夏に見られる虫を指していた可能性が高いとする説もあり、当時はより淡い緑や青みを帯びた色を指していたとも考えられています。

ちなみに、平安期に確認できる昆虫由来の色名は、この『夏虫色』のみであり、『玉虫色』『虫襖』などはまだ成立していません。鎌倉時代に『虫襖』が現れ、室町時代以降に『玉虫色』が一般化する中で、『夏虫色』もタマムシに由来する色名として整理されていったのかもしれません。

Natsumushi-iro refers to a dark, bluish-green color resembling the wings of the jewel beetle (tamamushi). It is one of the traditional dye colors of Japan. The term “natsumushi” (“summer insect”) is understood to refer to the jewel beetle, and the color name derives from the lustrous quality of its iridescent wings. Tamamushi-iro and Mushi-ao are considered to represent the same hue.
Natsumushi-iro is an old color name attested as early as the Heian period. In The Pillow Book (Makura no Sōshi, c. 1000), it appears in the passage:
“Sashinuki in the color of summer insects also appear cool.”
However, some scholars suggest that in the Heian period the term “natsumushi” may not have referred specifically to the jewel beetle, but rather to insects commonly seen in summer, such as cicadas or moths. If so, the color originally denoted may have been a lighter green or a bluish tone, rather than the deeper green associated with the jewel beetle today.

Interestingly, during the Heian period, Natsumushi-iro appears to be the only color name derived from an insect. Terms such as Tamamushi-iro and Mushi-ao had not yet emerged. With the appearance of Mushi-ao in the Kamakura period and the broader use of Tamamushi-iro from the Muromachi period onward, color names associated with the jewel beetle seem to have become more clearly distinguished. It is possible that during this process, Natsumushi-iro came to be more firmly understood as a color derived specifically from the jewel beetle.
