色の説明

梅幸茶（ばいこうちゃ）とは、茶みを含んだ淡い萌黄色（もえぎいろ）のことです。歌舞伎の大立者であった“初代尾上菊五郎（おのえきくごうろう）”の好みの色に由来しており、菊五郎の俳名である“梅幸”から色名も「梅幸好みの茶 = 梅幸茶」となっています。ちなみに俳名「梅幸」も後に「尾上梅幸」として歌舞伎の名跡のひとつとなりました。

当時は『浅葱色（あさぎいろ）』が全盛でしたがそれと全く異なる『萌黄色（もえぎいろ）』を打ち出したのは、個性を強調するためだったのでしょう。梅幸茶は通人の贔屓客の間で喜ばれ、天保の頃まで流行したそうです。

尾上菊五郎は京都生まれで始めは女形として舞台に立ちましたが、後に江戸に下り立役に転じて人気を集めました。ただ、その人気は彼の美貌よりも達者な芸にあったようです。

梅幸茶の渋みを含んだ色合にも芸風に通じる鮮やかさがあります。『手鑑模様節用』では、『草柳』という色の別名とされており、『茶色』と名がつくものの実際は黄緑系の色でした。
