色の説明

淡黄蘗（うすきはだ）とは、黄蘗染（きはだぞ）めの薄い色で明るく淡い黄色のことです。薄い黄色を表す『淡黄（たんこう）』よりも更に薄い色になります。ちなみに『黄蘗（きはだ）』は『刈安（かりやす）』と並んで日本の代表的な黄染の染料であり色名です。

黄蘗とはミカン科の落葉高木。日本全土に自生し樹皮をはぐと黄色の内皮があらわれることからこの名がつけられました。黄蘗の樹皮は「おうばく」とも呼ばれ、古くから染料や腹痛に効く漢方薬として用いられてきました。平安時代の『延喜式（えんぎしき）』によれば藍と黄蘗で『緑』や『藍色（あいいろ）』を染めたという記述があります。また、黄蘗による黄染は紙を染めると虫食いを防ぐ効果があることから、写経用の染紙にも用いらました。

明るいのに儚げ（はかなげ）な雰囲気のある『淡黄蘗』は、まるで暗い水平線から顔を出したばかりの月の色のようです。
