丁子染(ちょうじぞめ)とは、丁子の蕾の煮汁で染めた染め物の色で黄みの暗い褐色のことです。「香染」「濃き香」「こがれ香」とも呼ばれます。媒染剤を用いずに染めると、白茶に近い色になり、「淡き香」「香色」と呼ばれます。いずれも落ち着いた色調で、染めてしばらくは色に丁子の香りが伴います。ただし丁子は香木として高価だったため、一般には紅花と支子による代用染が行われました。

[Explanation of a color]
The Chōjizome, is a dark brown yellowish color of dyeing dyed in broth buds of clove. It is referred to as “Kogarekou”, “Kokikou” as “Kouzome”. When the dye without a mordant, it becomes color close to white tea, it is called “Awakikou” and “ko-iro”. In muted colors both, the smell of clove is due to the color for a while and dyed. However for clove was expensive as fragrant wood, substitute dyed by 支子 and safflower have been made in general.
